A cold snap decides more of your year than you think
Irish winters are mild and then, for a few days, they are not. Those days produce burst pipes, frozen condensates and boilers that finally give up, all at once, and they hand a large amount of work to whoever is visible and answering. The plumbers who capture it did the work in October.
The demand does not build, it appears
There is no ramp. The temperature drops, and within a day the phone behaviour changes completely.
Anyone starting to advertise at that point is bidding against every other plumber in the county at the worst possible price, and is not in the map results that produce most of the calls. The positioning has to already exist.
Decide what happens to calls you cannot take
In a cold snap you will miss calls. That is unavoidable. What is avoidable is those calls leaving no trace.
An automatic text on a missed call — that you are on a job, and when you will ring back — converts a hang-up into a hold. It costs very little and it is the highest-return thing most plumbing businesses can do to their phone handling.
An answering service for those weeks specifically is worth costing out. A handful of recovered jobs pays for the season.
Triage instead of first-come
Not every emergency is equal. A burst pipe flooding a house is different from no heat in a spare room, and a customer told honestly that you can be there Thursday will often wait rather than ring elsewhere.
Taking everything in the order it arrives means the big jobs go to whoever had a free slot. A first question about what is actually happening lets you put the day in the right order.
Prevention is a product you could sell
Lagging, frost protection, knowing where the stopcock is, drain-downs for empty property. All of it is cheap, all of it is useful, and almost nobody markets it.
It is also excellent autumn content, which is the season when you want to be accumulating visibility rather than spending on it.
The follow-up is in January
Every emergency in a cold snap is a customer who has just been reminded their system is old. That is the single best moment in the year to talk about a replacement.
Most plumbers finish the week exhausted and never go back to the list. It is the most valuable list they will generate all year.
