How to compete when patients fly out for treatment

An Irish patient quoted for implants or a full set of veneers will frequently look at what the same work costs in Northern Ireland, Hungary or Turkey, and the gap is large enough to be worth a flight. Practices that respond by discounting lose money and still lose the patient. The argument that works is a different one.

You will not win on price, so do not try

The cost difference is structural — different wages, different property costs, different regulation. Matching it is not possible and attempting it signals that your normal price was inflated.

It also attracts the patients most likely to leave again for the next cheaper offer.

Aftercare is the honest advantage

Extensive dental work needs review, and occasionally adjustment. That is normal rather than a sign something went wrong. A patient whose treatment was done two thousand kilometres away has no straightforward route back.

Set out plainly what your aftercare involves — when they are seen, for how long, what is included. That is concrete, checkable, and genuinely valuable, and most patients have not thought about it.

Explain the process rather than criticising the alternative

Running down overseas clinics reads as defensive and is the wrong tone for a regulated profession. It also insults patients who have already gone.

Explaining how your own treatment runs — the assessment, the stages, the time between them, who does what — makes the comparison for the reader without you having to make it.

Phasing keeps the patient in Ireland

A large part of why people travel is the single large bill. Treatment planned in stages over a longer period is a genuine alternative that very few practices present as an option.

Offering it turns a patient who was about to book a flight into one who books a first appointment.

Be findable at the research stage

This decision takes months and starts with reading. A practice with a proper page explaining implant treatment in plain language is in the conversation from the beginning.

A practice whose website says only that it offers implants is not, and will meet the patient only after they have already decided where they are going.
