The comparison your customer is making alone

A family that has outgrown its house has three options: move, extend, or use the space they already have. Almost every specialist markets as though the customer has already ruled out the first two, when in fact they are sitting at the kitchen table going round in circles about it. The firm that helps them think it through is the firm they ring.

Moving costs more than people remember

Stamp duty, legal fees, agent fees, surveys, moving costs, and the gap between what their house is worth and what the next one costs. Most people have only ever counted the last of those.

Setting the full picture out plainly — without numbers you cannot stand over, just the list of what actually has to be paid — reframes the decision immediately.

Be honest about when moving is right

Sometimes it is. A family that needs two more bedrooms is not solving it with a garage, and saying so makes everything else you say more credible.

You will lose a small number of enquiries that were never going to close and gain the trust of everybody else reading.

Extension versus conversion is the other half

Where there is garden to build into, the extension is a genuine competitor and frequently the better answer. Where there is not, the conversion is the only option and the customer may not have realised it.

A page that explains which situations suit which is useful, ranks, and positions you as an adviser rather than a salesperson — particularly if you do both.

Doing nothing is the real default

The most common outcome of these deliberations is another year of living with it. That is who you are actually competing with.

What moves people off it is not urgency — it is the sense that the project is simpler and more manageable than they feared. Explaining how long it takes and how disruptive it actually is does more than any offer.

Where the content belongs

This is early-stage thinking, so it belongs in guides and on Meta rather than in a search campaign aimed at people already looking for a builder.

It also brings in people you will close in six months rather than six days, which is why the follow-up has to run longer than most firms in this trade bother with.
