The garden nobody sees is a review you did not get

Roofers get a sign in the front garden. Shopfitters get a shopfront. A landscaper builds something beautiful behind a house where nobody except the owner and their immediate neighbours will ever see it. That invisibility is the central marketing problem of the trade, and reviews and referrals are the only real answer to it.

Ask on the last day, standing in the garden

The customer will never be happier about the work than the moment they first see it finished. That is when to ask, in person, with the review page already open on your phone.

A text a week later, when the novelty has worn off and life has resumed, converts at a fraction of the rate. Almost every landscaper does it the second way.

Ask for something specific

'Would you mind mentioning the drainage work?' produces a far more useful review than 'would you mind leaving a review'.

Specific reviews rank better, convert better, and answer the doubt the next customer actually has.

Photographs in the review are worth double

Google lets reviewers attach images, and a customer's own photograph of their finished garden is more persuasive than anything on your website because it obviously was not staged.

Most people will not think of it. Ask.

The neighbours are the referral

The people who can actually see the work are the ones either side and behind. They have watched the whole build and they have the same garden.

A card through the door while the job is running, or simply being friendly to the people looking over the fence, is the cheapest lead source in this trade and it costs nothing but manners.

Keep a route back to old customers

Gardens change. Planting matures, families grow, patios get extended. The customer you built for four years ago is a genuine prospect and most landscapers never contact them again.

A note once a year, ideally with a photograph of how their garden has matured, is welcome rather than intrusive and produces more work than most paid campaigns.
