Service plans: the recurring income plumbers skip

Plumbing is feast and famine by default. A cold week is chaos and a mild March is quiet, and nothing about a callout business smooths that out. An annual service arrangement does, and it is the most obvious unexploited idea in the Irish trade.

What it actually buys you

Predictable income, work scheduled into the months that would otherwise be quiet, and a list of systems you know intimately.

That last one is the real prize. A plumber who services the same boilers every year knows exactly which are near the end, which makes the replacement conversation natural rather than cold.

Keep it simple enough to explain in a sentence

An annual service, priority in an emergency, and a discount on parts or callouts. That is enough. Plans fail when they become complicated tiers nobody can compare.

Priority is the part customers actually value. Somebody who has been without heat in January will pay for the promise of being near the front of the queue next time.

Sell it at the end of a job, not in an advert

The moment somebody's heating has just been fixed is the moment they are most aware of what it is worth. That is when the plan makes sense to them.

Advertising a service plan cold to strangers is hard work. Offering it to a satisfied customer standing in a warm house is not.

It changes what a customer is worth

If a customer is a one-off callout, there is a hard limit on what you can spend to acquire one. If they are several years of servicing plus an eventual replacement, that limit moves a long way.

That is what lets a plumbing business outbid its competitors for the same click and still make money.

Landlords and agents will take it first

Rental property needs servicing on a schedule anyway and the paperwork matters to the landlord. A plan is an easier sell there than to a homeowner, and one letting agent can be many properties.

It is also the segment least likely to leave over price, because the hassle of changing plumber across a portfolio is worse than the saving.
