Traffic went up but enquiries went down
More visitors and fewer enquiries feels like a contradiction and it is usually a straightforward diagnosis. It almost always means you are reaching more of the wrong people, or the same people are hitting something that stops them.
Cause one: the traffic changed
A campaign widened its targeting, a page started ranking for a term with different intent, or a piece of content brought in readers rather than buyers.
Check which pages gained the traffic. If the growth is on a blog post or a broad informational page, nothing is broken — those visitors were never going to ring. Judge the pages that were always meant to convert.
Cause two: something broke
Forms stop sending. A phone number changes and nobody updates the site. A page starts erroring on mobile only. Tracking is removed in an update, so enquiries are arriving and not being counted.
Submit your own form and ring your own number from a mobile. It takes two minutes and it is the single most common cause we find.
- Submit the form yourself and confirm the email arrives
- Tap the phone number on a phone and check it dials
- Load the page on mobile data, not wifi
- Check whether the enquiry email is going to spam
- Confirm the tracking still fires
Cause three: you started competing differently
If you raised prices, changed your offer, or started ranking against stronger competitors on a comparison-heavy search, more people may be arriving and finding you are not what they wanted.
That is not necessarily bad. Fewer, better-qualified enquiries at a higher price is a good trade. Check what the enquiries you did get were worth before concluding anything.
Cause four: the follow-up slipped
Enquiries arriving and not being answered quickly produces fewer jobs, and to the owner it feels like fewer enquiries.
Count the enquiries received, not the jobs won, before deciding the marketing broke. They are frequently different problems with different fixes.
